GIRL AT A BAR: A young woman journeys to bars alone once a week for a year to reclaim her identity after half a decade debilitated with Lyme disease. Gabby, early 30s, a singer in LA, spent the last seven years with Lyme disease, bed-ridden for years and losing the use of her arms and voice. Now significantly recovered, she is ready to get her life back. Gabby gets the okay from her doctor to have a drink for the first time in over half a decade, so she plans a party to celebrate her improved health! But everyone flakes. So Gabby goes to the bar up the street. There she realizes no-one treats her like she’s sick and she’s free to not let her health be the focus of her life. Gabby decides this cannot be a one-time event and commits to go to a bar alone once a week, to explore her city and herself as a more able-bodied woman- still grappling with her past and managing her illness, but looking forward to a new future. Made possible by a grant from the nonprofit Bay Area Lyme Foundation, the project is inspired by the writer and creator Tracy Mulholland's blog and true story of being disabled from Lyme.
