Cai is originally from North Wales. He trained as an Actor at the Birmingham School Of Acting before developing his craft on stage, TV, Film and Voiceover. His transition to working behind the camera as a screenwriter began with his Chinese language short "Man Is Beast" which he wrote and directed. He followed this with his award winning short, "Ariel". NUMB is Cai's feature film writing & directorial debut. From a young age, Cai was obsessed with horror films and the martial arts films coming out of Hong Kong. Having studied martial arts since he was 4 years old and being an 80's baby, Cai's obsession with genre film was inevitable. But in his later teens, he started exploring worldwide art house films. Not just the grittier styles of European Film, but also the more dreamy films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Later on, his fascination with art cinema mainly became those films within the slow cinema movement. Cai's main inspirations in this arena are directors such as Jia Zhangke, Yasujirō Ozu, Tsai Ming-Liang, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Kelly Reichardt. But it was Jia Zhangke's films that left the biggest impression with Cai. The socio-economic subject, and a gritty realness is what Cai likes to bring to his movies. Cai is a fluent English, Welsh and Mandarin Chinese speaker. He is also currently studying Japanese, Spanish and Korean.
