Guillermo Casarín, an aspiring young filmmaker, came to the United States from Mexico to pursue his dreams of becoming a film director. Now, he is on the verge of graduating from one of the best film schools in the world, but after experiencing racism in the country and film industry, he finds himself questioning his place in Hollywood. Through compelling interviews--such as Academy Award-winning directors Phil Lord, Lee Unkrich, and Guillermo Del Toro, and Melissa Fumero from the Golden Globe-winning show "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"--and archival footage, Bad Hombrewood reveals the dark side of Hollywood’s history and the challenges Latinx filmmakers face while trying to succeed in the entertainment industry.

About the Director(s)

Guillermo Casarín is a Mexican film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born in Mexico City, which is full of contrast; on the one hand, it’s a beautiful culture that explodes with art and color, and on the other hand, there’s injustice, corruption, and poverty. Films were a way for Guillermo to escape to other realities, but they weren’t enough at some point. Soon enough, Guillermo decided that a change was necessary, and he realized the best way to achieve that was through art and film. Casarín earned his BFA in film at Art Center College of Design, where he graduated with honors, having the highest GPA of his class. He also received an “honors term,” which the school only gives to one student from all majors. Casarín has directed several shorts, commercials, and PSAs. He directed the campaign “Este año, tu voto es cosa seria," part of the AIGA 2016 #GetOutTheVote campaign. The film was aired nationwide on the most important Latino networks such as Univision, TV Azteca, and Telemundo, among others. Oscar nominee and Latino activist Edward James Olmos promoted the call to action to reach 43 million people or 89% of the US Latino population. He also wrote, produced, and directed several PSAs for The City of Pasadena, CVS Health, and the American Cancer Society. He just graduated with his master’s at USC, thanks to The George Lucas Family Foundation Endowed Student Support Fund for Production, of which he is a recipient. He is also a recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation grant.

OH GREAT, RILEY'S DEPRESSED AGAIN

Riley’s self-medication of choice right now is weed and lots of it. As she sits in her car trying to find the energy to attend an annual brunch hosted by her damn near perfect sister Jasmine, she is visited by Lee, the visual (and more put together) representation of her consciousness. Lee attempts to guide Riley through the brunch, coaching her on how to hide her “crazy” but it all comes to a head when the friend group realizes Riley is, in fact, depressed again. An intervention follows, and Riley is painfully confronted with the reality that no matter how good she thinks she is at hiding her depression, it’s impacting all those that love her. She’s left wondering how is she supposed to handle her pain and the impact it has on the ones she loves the most.
